TRICK-OR-TREAT ADVENTURE ART CONTEST WITH PRIZES!!!

Ahoy there, fellow Newgrounders!

On Halloween of 2007, myself, Nick, and Pox released Trick-or-Treat Adventure. At the time, it was the largest game the three of us had released here on Newgrounds, so we had high hopes players would enjoy our absurdist tribute to the point-and-click adventure games we grew up on. As time went on, it exceeded our expectations with over a million players and even ended up being a nominee for the 2007 Newgrounds Game of the Year.

Now here we are... just shy of eighteen years later (holy shit, we're old!), and the three of us decided to get together to port Trick-or-Treat Adventure to Steam. It's not just a simple port though - we've created mini-games, updated dialogue, included flashy item combine animations, and even added in an entire new quest to the game! It's our way of celebrating one of the games we had so much fun making together on Newgrounds back in the golden age of Flash so we can (hopefully) introduce it to a new generation.

Trick-or-Treat Adventure also represents another important piece of Newgrounds history - it was the first game to ever have ads embedded in the preloader. It may not seem like much these days, but back then, we just made these games in our spare time with no expectations of making money off of them. Thanks to the ads, we could actually make a lil' cash to buy pizza with, which was super exciting to us.

With that in mind, we decided to invite all of you to join in the fun of our upcoming Steam release with an all new art contest! Since Trick-or-Treat Adventure was the first game to feature in-game ads, we'd like to see how all you talented artists would imagine a full-page magazine print ad for the game! Video game print ads in the 80s & 90s were often ridiculous, so by all means lean into that as much as you can. Here are a few examples for inspiration:

-Magazine Ad Sample 1

-Magazine Ad Sample 2

-Magazine Ad Sample 3

-Magazine Ad Sample 4

Don't feel limited by those examples though. Comb through any old video game magazines and see what inspires you! Create your entry in any style you like, just make sure it's based on Trick-or-Treat Adventure!

Here's the logo for the game in case any of you need it to use in your entries:

-Trick-or-Treat Adventure logo

-Trick-or-Treat Adventure logo with glow

Note: feel free to design your own version of the logo to match the style of the magazine ad you create!)

Contest Rules:

-Create a mockup that looks like an old school game magazine ad for Trick-or-Treat Adventure

-Submit your entries to the Newgrounds Art Portal

-Make sure your entries include the tag #trick-or-treat-adventure or it won't be counted

-Enter as many times as you like, but submit each entry separately

-Entries must be SFW (just like a real magazine ad)

-No AI submissions

-The deadline for entries is the same as our upcoming Steam release date - October 1st, 2025

Here's the list o' prizes:

1st - $100 + Free Steam Key

2nd - $50 + Free Steam Key

3rd - $50 + Free Steam Key

4th - $50 + Free Steam Key

5th through 7th - Free Steam Key

We can't wait to see the crazy retro-style print ads you come up with for Trick-or-Treat Adventure. Big thanks to all of you who enter, and a special thanks to everybody who supported the game over the past two decades. Can't tell you how much it means to hear from so many people who revisit the game come Halloween season every year, and we hope you'll have a blast playing our upcoming Steam port!

Love and rotting pumpkins,

-Rog, Nick, & Pox

P.S.: Please check out trickortreatadventure.com and add the game to your Wishlist on Steam. It's hard as it is to get noticed on their platform, but better wishlist numbers can definitely help, so it'd be greatly appreciated if you can lend us a hand. Thanks!

Let's do this!

Is one of the prizes a mint in box castle grayskull? Why not?

Hii! How do you get games to have ads on them?

This is how we did it back in the day, but not so much anymore haha:

Dope

I'd loe to do it but I unfortunately don't know anything about this game lol. Even if I did it would probably look like a mid 2000s iPod advertisement lmao

You can play the original version of the game right here on Newgrounds:

And a mid-2000s iPod ad sounds fine ;)

hey have you guys gonna think you can uptade abobo's big adventure as (Sega Genesis or Mega Drive version) ?

We currently don't have any plans for Abobo's Big Segadventure, but never say never ;)

I remember playing this!!! It was also one of the earliest games to feature medals. Hoping the Steam release is successful!

I know it's already against Newgrounds' ToS, but you should probably amend the rules to include absolutely no AI work for submissions.

@EudaemonArts Fortunately you can play the old web version on Newgrounds!
https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/408167

Also, check out my old news posts/twitter for some inspiration!

@crummylion Good idea, we'll update it, but I think NG art portal rules don't allow AI anyway.

"Abobo's Big Adventure" should be next!

Question, lightworker bro, do we make the art ourselves and use Adobe InDesign for example to make it into a magazine? Or is the art itself how we arrange some photos into a magazine article like in a college course project? Also, may love bless you and keep the light flowing, vibin’ Halloween Broin’.

You can create it however you like - Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, whatever tools work best for you. It just needs to look like an ad that could've appeared in an old school video game magazine. How you choose to design it is entirely up to you, just have fun with it! :)

i was so expecting one of the sample links to be EarthBound lol

Let's do this

@Mockery Ok, think I get it, thanks lightworker dude, and rock on!

@Mockery but that mean you guys can beacuse we want our goal game come back as different game style except the same always be NES

Nice, I've a bit about this game I should play it

Glad to see you back here man. As a kid your site is what originally got me interested in horror and provided me with a huge watch list to get me going. Now these days its my favourite genre and compromises about half of the media I consume and make.

Much appreciated. Always nice to hear I-Mockery introduced people to so many fun things over the years. Thanks for letting me know.

Sorry to be old school, but I think holidays should be celebrated on the day they occur and nowhere else. Hallowe'en on October 31, Christmas on December 25, Thankgiving on the last Thursdays of November, etc. and so on. Holidays should not be whole seasons. That's why we have seasons, because they are not holidays, they are seasons. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. Hallowe'en is not a two month season. Cut it out.

In the words of The Dude, "That's just, like, your opinion, man..." Halloween IS a two month season starting September 1st and ending on October 31st. We've been celebrating it that way on i-mockery.com for over two decades now. You don't have to like it, but plenty of other people do, so to each their own.

I was about to join but afraid that I am in my tablet and didn't upload steam.

You don't have to do anything with Steam for this contest, and you can play the original game here on Newgrounds: https://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/408167 After that, you can submit your entry to the Art Portal.
